Escaping Istanbul - A spring day at the beach

Escaping Istanbul - A spring day at the beach

When people think of Istanbul, one of the first thoughts that comes to mind is a huge, bustling metropolis. Actually, this is not far from reality, as currently more than 14 Million people decided to live in the transcontinental city. Oh wow, right? Add to this the almost 4 Million vehicles, thousands of dogs and cats, ships crossing the Bosphorus, planes hoovering in the sky and there you have it - a constantly moving crowd, to which you have to adapt or escape.

Marmara Sea

It was a beautiful, sunny Sunday morning in Istanbul, when we decided to escape.

Good Morning, Silivri

Traveling along Marmara Sea's coastline is really enjoyable. That is mostly due to the sparkly blue water tricking you into stopping every few kilometers. Arriving in Silivri was so quick that our stomachs were still not awake and asking for breakfast. So we decided to wander a bit in the morning sun, while the city was yawning its way to a new begining.

Choosing a breakfast place is always tricky in Turkey, as you have sooo many delicious options and unfortunately just one stomach. However, if you came with a malfunction from "fabric", such as I did, you'll have a separate part for dessert :) Whenever we are traveling we love to discover delicious food and cozy places, so apps come to the rescue. My favorite one at the moment is definitely Zomato. If you are not familiar with it, let me brief you in shortly (If you do know it, just skip this part and think of your favorite dessert haha).

My love-story with Zomato started back in 2015 when I decided to move to Istanbul. As a foodie expat, with one and a half stomach, who did not speak the language, this app was a godsent gift. I suddenly had access to all the restaurants around me, with their real reviews, food pictures, their up-to-date menus, opening hours, special offers and map directions. Moreover, you can search for restaurants according to types of meal (breakfast, lunch, cafes, delivery, you get the point), or through their awesome collections. Recently, since the weather changed its mood to spring, I've been hooked to their "Best Rooftop Restaurants" in Istanbul. The app is available in 21 countries, USA, Australia, the UK, UAE, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, Portugal, the Philippines, Indonesia, Turkey, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Chile, Italy, Lebanon, Brazil, Sri Lanka and Qatar.

Moving away from the food a bitsy, here's an almost fun fact: Silivri is a district of Istanbul province. So as it turns out, escaping the city is quite though, however we did find what we were looking for. A deserted beach full of doggiesss. Tihihi, kidding. We didn't actually look for that, it just came as an unexpected, but deeply appreciated gift.

Deserted beach, us and a few doggies

After finishing our morning walk and breakfast, we headed towards the beach. Due to the weather, a mild spring one, people stayed away from Marmara's shores. It was like renting the beach for an afternoon. We installed our camping chairs, flyied kites and imagined owning homes a couple of meters away from the sea.

Our reverie was pleasantly interrupted by wiggling tails and curious wet noses. Meet Fındık (hazelnut, in Turkish) - the beach guardian and his friend Tarçın (cinnamon, in Turkish) - the Tasmanian Devil of Cocker Spaniels'. It was love at first sight for us, for them it was love at sight of food that we got out of our backpacks. Nonetheless, we had tons of fun and activity.

If it comes, let it. If it goes, let it.

Saying good-bye to our newly made friends, our almost owned beach-house and the sea-side serenity on a day in Spring - this one was a toughie. We promised to ourselves that we'll come back in summer to swim with Fındık and Tarçın.

It's true what they say after all,

Some things just fill your heart without trying.
Goodbye Silivri
